Dear COG member, This Thursday is the 3rd Thursday of June and COG Velo will be heading out on one its longer club rides. The plan is to go for a Dunkeld Dash, this is an 85km ride and will take 3+ hours. We will meet at 6.30pm prompt outside the hotel as usual aiming to get on the move as promptly possible. Most riders will want to be home before 10pm and as such the average speed will likely be a little higher than on most club rides around the Carse.
Please remember to bring a warm layer, lights and some fuel incase of any problems. A link to a map of the route can be found on the club website ‘club rides‘ page. If you prefer to ride a shorter route but still wish to come along at the start then it is easy enough to turn around at various points and do a shorter loop. If you plan to do this then please get back to me or use the website discussions page so others can see the options available.
A trip up the Glens!
Yesterday saw a small group of Carse of Gowrie cyclists enjoying the Angus Glens. It was a big cycle, Glen Isla loop covering 120Km and up nearly 1500 metres of climbing – very well done folks.
Inchture > Abernyte > Meigle > Loch Kinnordy > Loch of Lintrathen > Glen Isla > Black Water > Bridge of Cally > Blairgowrie > Meikelour > Kinrossie > Collace > Abernyte > Inchture
Carse of Gowrie 10 riders out for our Thursday COG Ride which is great. Weather was good cycling conditions warm and cloudy with a little wind. We rode from Inchture to Longforgan up Knapp over to Balbeggie. Then towards Rait and down Kilspindie folowed by a sprint along the Errol to Inchture road back to Inchture Hotel. Small good climbs up Knapp and Jocks Brae – Russell showing how its done of course. 🙂 http://app.strava.com/activities/60154859 Distance: 47km Elevation: 492m
Another Sportive coming up very soon, this weekend is the Cairngorm Classic. Which offers 2 routes 50 miles or 100 miles. The UK’s highest event on a public roads (632m) – Finishes on Scotland’s Alpe D’huez at the Cairngorm Ski Centre. The routes take you from the heights of Cairngorm through the north of the Spey Valley. Plenty climbing but is a very enjoyable ride through the Cairngorms.

Great performance from Carse of Gowrie boys last night all finishing around 25 minute mark. Weather was very wet – hot showers and rest up until thursday is in order. Also little Ben should get a mention for his impressive effort – well done!
Big turn out last night 14 riders I believe, some opting for a TT in preperation for Dundee Thistle 10 mile TT on 11th June. The rest choosing a normal club ride which was probably just as demanding with 2 big climbs Glendoick and Rait. Weather was perfect with sunshine and slight wind, most enjoyable. Some new faces again well done guys, hope you enjoyed the ride.
It turned out to be a very nice sunny day with some wind, perfect cycling conditions. Even managed to get sunburn on my arms – bit tender today. I was the only rider flying the flag for COG Velo (Chris). Tough climb up Cairn o’ Mount but enjoyable all the same near the beginning of the race. Then just when you think it will be a nice ride into Edzell the route takes you up the Cattethuns – nice little climb!
Surprised myself by finishing 4th overall – not too shaby!
One of our biggest turn outs so far on a club night! I counted 13 riders at the beginning and by the end we were 14, very impressive. Good pace last night and some fast times going up the hills – well done. Great night for it, sun was out and the wind was fine to which makes a change. And only 1 puncture last night for poor Nick (see photo).
How to join our friendly cycling club in the Carse of Gowrie.
Carse of Gowrie Velo are an affiliated British Cycling federation club.
We advise anyone interested in taking the leap in joining a cycling club. To first come along and give it a go. Our club rides are every Thursday evening at 6.30pm from Inchture Hotel. This will give you an idea of what it’s like to ride in our group and see the ability/pace of our club.
We vary our routes but generally we cover 30-50km on our short rides and on the 3rd Thursday of every month we go for a long ride about 80km. More information can be found on our Club Rides page.
