Ride London 2013

chris-kennedy-cog-veloPrudential Ride London – Surrey 100 in central London was the biggest cycling sportive ever held in the UK with 17,500 riders. Race was started at 6.00 am by Boris Johnson Mayor of London at Olympic Park and was well organised to handle the huge volume of cyclists. Boris also took part himself and finished just over 8 hours. Weather was ideal riding conditions, it wasn’t too hot, absolutely perfect. The route was mostly flat and fast with a couple of little hills, Box Hill and Leith Hill much easier than the Carse of Gowrie climbs we are used to 🙂

I was placed 181/17,500 with a time of 4hours 18mins. I even took a stint at the front coming into HUB 1 (25miles) – that was awesome! Although it was for a short distance, still its not everyday you get to pull along 17,500 cyclists!

My ride is on Strava

Anyone interested in registering for next years ballot it opens.

It was a fantastic experience and I would thoroughly recommend it. Maybe a Team COG entry next year…?

Highland Perthshire Challenge & Beer

As its now August many of you will be looking ahead at other Sportives and our local Highland Perthshire Challenge is taking place on Saturday 24th August 2013. There is a choice of 50 miles or 100 miles, great scenery through perthshire, and its right on our doorstep.

A few Cog folk have already signed up and it would be good to have a big turn out from Carse of Gowrie Velo. And the plan after the event is to go to Rait beer festival (not sure if its on?) or Glencarse Highland Games which is on the same day.

It may be out for some if you are riding Skye Sportive on the same day or the St. Andrews Sportive on the Sunday 25th August.

Find out more from Highland Perthshire Challenge website.

Discuss further in the forum.

Hope to see you there.

COG Ride 25th July

cog-fog-photographDifferent route from our usual thursday night COG ride – which everyone enjoyed. The fog closed in on the higher ground making our descent a little scary, but no accidents which is always good. Head count was 12 riders which is great. The kudos must go to Nick P for is attack on Glen Carse climb, even Pedro was getting a bit twitchy thinking he might lose his KOM 😉

COG Summer Ride

Monster COG Summer Ridebanchory16

Sat 20th July and/or Sat 3rd August
150miles / 240km

Probably 2-3000m ascent

We are planning a monster Carse of Gowrie summer ride around the Deeside loop from Inchture, taking in Cairn O Mount and Glenshee.

This will be on Sat 20th July and/or Sat 3rd August, depending on who is available and around the time. If there’s a good few folk we would do both. By my reckoning its about 150miles / 240km!!! Probably 2-3000m ascent. You will need an all day pass…….

We’ll stick together for the rides but you would need to be potentially self supporting for 12 hours! There will be lunch +\- coffee stops.

Please discuss on the ‘discussion forum‘ of the COG website, in particular indicating which, if either, date you’d be keen on provisionally coming along.

Dunkeld Dash 20th June

dunkeld-dash-photoDear COG member, This Thursday is the 3rd Thursday of June and COG Velo will be heading out on one its longer club rides. The plan is to go for a Dunkeld Dash, this is an 85km ride and will take 3+ hours. We will meet at 6.30pm prompt outside the hotel as usual aiming to get on the move as promptly possible. Most riders will want to be home before 10pm and as such the average speed will likely be a little higher than on most club rides around the Carse.

Please remember to bring a warm layer, lights and some fuel incase of any problems. A link to a map of the route can be found on the club website ‘club rides‘ page. If you prefer to ride a shorter route but still wish to come along at the start then it is easy enough to turn around at various points and do a shorter loop. If you plan to do this then please get back to me or use the website discussions page so others can see the options available.
