Nick Hardy Memorial Road Race

The Nick Hardy Memorial Road Race is an 80km road race around Monikie Country Park by Dundee, over 3 laps of a sporting course, finishing off the public roads within Monikie Country Park.

Nick was a promising young member of the Carnoustie Cycling Club who passed away in his sleep whilst on a training camp in Majorca in 1993. The trophy has been awarded every year since and Nicks parents have attended and supported every edition of the race.

The race is for 3rd and 4th category Seniors and Masters, plus 2nd, 3rd and 4th category Women and Junior riders. 60 places are available online to be selected by the organiser as detailed in the rider information section.

I will retain a further 20 places, pending permission to increase the field size, to be allocated at my discretion to under represented groups, principally women and junior riders, then from the waiting list.

Registration and more information can be found on the British Cycling website. Organisers website Angus Bike Chain CC.

Good Luck for those who were lucky enough to get a place.

Ythan CC APR Road Race

Brief Race Report from Ali

Ythan CC APR
Sunday 30th March 2014

It was freezing cold, I started in Group 3 of 6 with many strong riders. The race was 3 laps of 11 miles, with a 14% climb in the middle. As always in the cold it took me a lap to find my legs. I was chewing the bars for most of the first lap – I really should have worn knee warmers, my legs were like blocks of ice. Our group split on the climb and 5 of us got away. We were caught by Group 4 in the second lap and then we split again on the climb. This time my legs were better so I made the split. On lap 3 we were caught by Groups 5 & 6 just after the climb and we rode full gas to chase the front group which was still off the front. We never caught them, eventually rolling in 51 secs behind.

Happy to finish in the bunch in my first road race for nearly two years. Felt stronger as the race went on, but would have been better with warmer legs. Also didn’t drink enough or even take a gel on board.

Results are available on the British Cycling Website.

COG Ride 27th March

Enjoyable loop to Perth and back to Inchture taking in some nice climbs – Glencarse, Kinnoull, Rait and Kinnaird. The wind was a bit rubbish on our return but we had some strong legs on the front Pedro and Nick – nice work chaps.

Crit on Campus Results

Pete: So race report goes something like this.

First event of the new road season, this was the inaugural (of hopefully many) COTCs. The team at the Stirling bike club put on a top class event, with a great course on the closed roads and car parks of Stirling Uni. Events from junior up to elite. Stars such as Davie Lines, Katie Archibald (world gold medallist last month!), rubbed shoulders with some of the COG elite (well that is how Pedro referred too himself until today ;-)).
In the youth race, COG Youth “did great” – Ben Fettes and Alfie George Finished in the top 5, Alfie riding away with the older age group to take the win!
In the cat 4’s, due to the large number of entries there were two races. Paul Fettes rode a storming race to finish 14th, Luis from the ABC was second. Paul was in the thick of it, leading for a couple of laps, and the first race was the fastest of the two cat 4s.
In the second race, Pedro Petrie started really strong, leading the first lap. Had it not had been for the cheering for some of the other fancied competitors (McComisky), he would have heard the bell and been on for the sprint. That, and the fact that no one notice that two had been away on the break for the entire race, meant that places could have been higher Pedro was a creditable 15th, I held on after a suicidal attempt at a break, for 19th.
In the womans race, world champion Katie Archibald won, with Thistle’s Beckie Nixon was an awesome 4th.
In the big race it was a fight out by the elite riders, with McCallum, Oliphant and Lines taking the top places. A nasty crash saw one of the St Andrews riders leave with a broken hand, the racing was hard!

Good day out for the Coggers, promising for the season ahead.

COG TDT 20th March

Fast boys were out for a good blast last night – no holding back. Pedro putting the hurt on Pedro-style. I’m sure everyone felt it! Weather started getting bad as we crossed the Tay road bridge on our way back to Inchture – very wet. Hope you made it back in one piece Nick 😉
